What does 1 Corinthians 15:3 really mean?

Paul isn't offering his own theology — he's handing on a creed he received, and he calls it the first-importance core of the gospel.

The verse opens a short, formal summary that scholars recognize as one of the earliest Christian creeds — likely predating even this letter (written c. AD 55). Paul's phrasing is deliberate: "I received … I passed on" is the technical Jewish language for handing down authoritative tradition intact. The phrase rendered "first of all" (Greek: en prōtois) doesn't mean merely "first in sequence" but "among the things of chief importance" — a priority claim, not just a chronological one. Two things are being asserted simultaneously: that Christ's death was a real, historical event, and that it carried a specific meaning — it was "for our sins," not an accident of Roman politics. Then Paul anchors both claims in the Old Testament: "according to the Scriptures." He's saying this wasn't improvised; it was the culmination of a long story already told. Verse 4 continues the creed — burial, resurrection, appearances — and the whole passage through v. 8 is Paul's argument that the resurrection is inseparable from this same received tradition.

"Died for our sins" means Jesus was punished by God in our place — full stop, no nuance. The substitution reading is common and not entirely wrong — Paul does mean Christ's death dealt with sin on our behalf — but the verse is doing something more specific that often gets lost. First, the phrase "for our sins" (Greek: hyper tōn hamartiōn hēmōn) carries the sense of "in behalf of" or "for the sake of," which is broader than a single theory of exactly how that works. As Jamieson, Fausset & Brown note, this particular Greek construction doesn't by itself lock in one precise mechanism of atonement. Second, and more importantly, Paul immediately attaches the clause "according to the Scriptures" — which points readers back to texts like Isaiah 53 and the Passover typology. He's saying the meaning of the death was encoded in a long scriptural story, not just in a single legal transaction. Third, the verse is part of a received creed, not a doctrinal treatise. People who stop at v. 3 and treat it as a complete systematic statement miss that Paul's main argument in chapter 15 is about the resurrection — the death is the premise, but resurrection is the point. Stripping v. 3 from its context turns a link in a chain into the whole chain.

παρέδωκα paredōka

"I delivered" or "I passed on" — from paradidōmi, the standard Greek verb for the formal transmission of authoritative tradition. The matching term "I received" (parelabon) completes a technical pair used in both Jewish rabbinic and early Christian contexts for handing down teaching without alteration. The choice of words signals Paul is not innovating; he is a link in a chain, and the chain predates him.
